What's required of me to start?

Not much. You’re likely still in the sauna planning phase

Our 5×6 SMP fits your existing 5×6×7 room

For now, we just want to make you aware of these phases and skills for it all to come together

Measurements and Joist Direction

Measuring walls (#1-5) and ceiling joist direction is NOT required to begin your quote or order. Once you’ve built walls #1-5 or you have a plan, send us dimensions and indicate ceiling direction (See Wall TAB in Step 4)

NOTE: Before installation, walls must be framed at ~5×6 ft with a ~7 ft ceiling and a 24×82″ door R.O. (see options). Heater appliances work best with in/exit wall vents!

Electrical Preparation

Your electician will run wire for the sauna heater, light and switch through studs and return later to connect them after you’ve insulated the walls, tacked up the sauna foil vapor barrier and covered the walls in cedar paneling. A 5×6 sauna room uses: 6 kW heater / 240V / 30 amp breaker / 10 gauge wire

Light Carpentry Skills to Build a Sauna

T&G (Tongue & Groove) boards require field trimming to affix to the ceiling and walls. Install the pre-built benches, guard rail, flooring (optional) and trim to cover all seams. Please watch our Sauna Kit Construction Video Series

See our complete prep list before sauna installation (if Cedarbrook installs your sauna)

What are the contruction steps involved?

You have an existing 5×6×7 room OR you’ll frame one in

PREPARATION AND CONSTRUCTION: VARIES 3-8 WEEKS

Main Steps to Constructing a Sauna Room using our Sauna Materials Package
Watch our Install a Sauna Materials Package in New Construction Video

Structural Preparation

  • Construct studs and joists for a 7′ ceiling, typically. If you have existing drywall, NO need to remove it (if walls are insulated)
  • Frame a 24×82″ R.O. (Rough Opening) for your door
  • Add blocking for the vents (4×6″ common). In small indoor saunas you can use a <1″ gap under the door as an intake vent

Electrical Preparation

  • Review the electrical capacity of your service panel for available Amps A 5×6 sauna room uses: 6 kW heater / 240V / 30 amp breaker / 10 gauge wire
  • Run electrical wire planning for the heater, lights, switch and external controls (optional)

Build Your 5×6 Cedar Sauna!

  • Insulate the walls with formaldehyde-free batting (source locally)
  • Staple sauna foil vapor barrier (provided) to the joists & studs — Do NOT skip!
  • Trim and nail your cedar paneling to the ceiling first, then the walls
  • Start first T&G row near the floor. Go round the room. Check corner seams line up
  • Install sauna door (you can order a custom jamb)
  • Install the sauna benches and add the facing (optional)
  • Nail corner seams and trim the door
  • Build the duckboard flooring (optional) in removable sections

Power Up!

  • Hang heater on the wall (if wall-mounted type)
  • Next, your electrician will return to connect the heater, controls, sensor, light/s and switch, etc.
  • Make sure they test your heater!
  • Load your heater with rocks loosely for best air flow and take a sauna! Enjoy and send us pictures

Do you install the sauna materials too?

Sauna Kit Installation Quote

Yes, we install our 5×6 sauna materials package

Installation is quoted separately from the package. Although we ship all over the U.S., we can ONLY do sauna installations in and around the Pacific Northwest in Washington state

Basic Information

  • It is NOT necessary for us to visit your site to give you a quote. You can send us pictures of your site or condition via email: info@cedarbrooksauna.com
  • You can also hire a contractor or handy man. A sauna installation can vary from 25 – 40% of the package price. Send them to our sauna videos page and ask them if they can handle it
  • To send your electrician the proper information. Installation instructions regarding heaters are in tabs lower down on every heater page. Find your heater on our website first and send them the link.
  • Please read our installation prep list on this page: How to Prepare for My Sauna Installation?

Minimum requirements

  • Install site < 100 mile radius of our showroom in Woodinville, WA. We sometimes make exceptions
  • We do NOT do electrical work. Your electrician will install your sauna heater, lights and switches and test them!
  • We do NOT do structural work. Your general contractor or handy man will build walls, lower your ceiling to ~7′, make a ~24×82″ rough opening for your door, add blocking for vents and insulate (batting)
  • SAUNA INSTALLATION: We affix the vapor barrier, fasten cedar T&G to the interior, install benches, door, vent covers, guard rail and flooring, mount heater and trim all seams and door

Conditions Affecting a Quote

To give a proper quote, we factor for the following conditions:

  • Distance to deliver your sauna. We wave delivery charges if we do the installation
  • Actual build site. Will your sauna go in the basement or over a bridge, then onto a goat trail? Please tell us what conditions to expect in your email or your notes
  • Work Flow. Your site condition may restrict where we can actually make wood cuts. If we must walk more than 20 feet to cut outside, then it will add to the time and cost

    Sauna Footprint: 5′ 8″ × 6′ 8″

Sauna Footprint for our Sauna Kits

In our 5 × 6 Sauna Kits, the USEABLE INTERIOR floor space is exactly 5 × 6
    EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS: 5′ 8″ × 6′ 8″
See ALL measurements and details in the "Kit Specifications" button (at right)

QUESTION: Also we're sometimes asked ... What size should my base or floor tray be for our OUTDOOR SAUNA KITS, so rain water sheds OFF of ALL sides of the sauna?

ANSWER: You should build your base at: 5′ 63/4″ × 6′ 63/4″. Our 1x8x3/4″ beveled cedar siding will extend just beyond this dimension, so water sheds nicely away!

    FLOOR PLAN ELEMENTS

    Wall Panels #1-

    Wall Panels #1 –

Pre-built wall and ceiling panels are HIGHLY insulated (4″thick / R-20)

Made of 100% Western Red Cedar — even the frame!
NO glues or plywood are EVER used

Red lines shown are wall panel seams. Each wall panel weighs 100-150 lbs. with a default height of 6′4″. If your sauna is a Trumpkin design (8′4″ ceiling height), then much heavier, 175-200 lbs.

Refer to the wall panels numbers #1- when placing items during the sauna design step or if adding a note so we know exactly where you'd like an item

For example if adding a window (later), pick the wall panel number. See below Step 4 > Windows. You can move lights, vents, switch, controls, etc as needed too by indicating in the final notes box (above the Add to Cart button)

    Walls: 1-5 + Joists

    Walls: #1 – 5 + Joist Direction

To send you correct T&G cedar board lengths ...
    • Measure walls #1-5 (or estimate if NOT yet built) and
    • Indicate your Ceiling Joist Direction in Step #4 > Walls
    RE: Ceiling Joist Direction

IF your sauna is SQUARE (W=L), then your ceiling panel board can only be one length, but if your room is a RECTANGLE then it's IMPORTANT to know your ceiling joist direction. OR if you don't like your curent ceiling direction, you can change it in Step 4 > Walls > Joist Direction

    RE: Drywall and Windows
    • DRYWALL — IF you already have drywall up, there's NO NEED to REMOVE it. IF your walls are insulated, venting is available and you can run wiring, you're good. If not, there's some planning to do
    • WINDOWS — Add them below in Step 4 > Windows

    Benches: A, B, C

    Sauna Benching

Our sauna benches are made of 100% Western Red Cedar with NO VISIBLE fasteners

This 5x6′ Sauna Material Package includes 3 sauna benches with NO KNOTS

    • Benches are fixed OR optionally slide out of the way
    • Our standard bench WIDTH is 18″
    • Standard bench HEIGHT is 20″ (LOW) and 40″ (HIGH)
    • Facing (or skirting) and back rests are optional
    • Our 4 bench plans include one 22″ wide HIGH bench

All sauna bench features can be adjusted in Step 4

NOTE: We NEVER cut sauna benches to custom lengths — This should ALWAYS be done on site, as your measurements may change slightly. They're built in foot increments only

Need more head room? You can change your door and ceiling height in Step 2 > Choose Your Sauna Door

    Benches: A, B, C

    Sauna Benching

Our sauna benches are made of clear 100% Western Red Cedar with NO VISIBLE fasteners

This 5x6′ Modular Sauna Kit includes 3 sauna benches with NO KNOTS

    • Benches are fixed OR optionally slide out of the way
    • Our standard bench WIDTH is 18″
    • Standard bench HEIGHT is 18″ (LOW) and 36″ (HIGH)
    • Facing (or skirting) and back rests are optional
    • Our 4 bench plans include one 22″ wide HIGH bench

    6 kW Heater

    6kW Sauna Heater

A 6 kW heater is included with our 5x6′ Modular Sauna Kits / Volume = 210 cu. ft. (with default 6′4″ ceiling height)
    • Upgrade your heater or choose NO heater IF you have one
    • We add blocking in the walls to hang wall-mounted heaters, especially HUUM DROP heaters

Some notch their benches to create more room. Benches can also be recessed. We've seen many creative sauna plans over the decades since we started (1971)

NOTE: Wall-mounted heaters are VERY HOT at the top third. The middle is warm and the bottom of the shroud body is actually cool. Our LOW benches seat tops are 18-20″ off the floor, so you can place benches closer to wall-mounted heaters at these heights

    6 kW Heater

    6kW Sauna Heater

A 6 kW heater is included with our 5x6′ Sauna Material Packages / Volume = 210 cu. ft. (with default 7′0″ ceiling height)
    • Upgrade your heater or choose NO heater IF you have one
    • Add blocking in the walls to hang wall-mounted heaters
    • Heaters can be rotated (90°) to an adjacent wall, IF 2 ft is available

    Door Swing

    Sauna Door Swing

Rail & Stile Door + 16x67″ Glass is included in our 5x6′ sauna

Sauna doors ALWAYS open out as a safety precaution

The door swing shown is our suggestion. It's a bit easier when reaching for the built-in heater controls to prop the door open with your backside

Set your door swing when choosing your door in Step 2

NOTE: Doors come with one handle as they're self-closing. Mount the handle on the outside of the door

    Flooring

    Optional Duckboard Flooring

We offer a grating to cover your hard floor

See Step 4 > Flooring. Choices are None, Walking Area Only or the Entire Floor

Installing Duckboard flooring is the LAST step when building a sauna
    Purpose of Duckboard:
    • Duckboard is removable, so you can easily clean!!
    • Warms to the bare foot
    • Conceals an ugly floor / see cedar everywhere
    • We provide the materials. Assembly required

    Vents

    Sauna Venting

Vents ensure adequate fresh cool air enters the sauna and some hot air exits

You can move the vents as needed per your site condition. Hot air (that's exiting) should be vented into any adjacent room or an attic, sometimes outside is the only option, but NEVER into a wall cavity. Also, NOT that much heat actually leaves the sauna

Can I vent under the door?

Yes! In smaller sauna rooms (<4x6) it's fine to use a < 1″ gap under the door without a dedicated INTAKE vent

In larger saunas (>4x6), venting ONLY under the door will put a strain on the sauna heater appliance. Heaters are designed for cold air to easily pass through the rocks and over the elements heating the sauna room. It breathes better and so will you!

    Vent Size Rule:
    • If heater < 9kW, use 4x6″ vents
    • If heater ≥ 9kW, use 6x8″ vents

    Vents

    Light / Switch / Control

    Lights / Switch / Controls

Move these items as needed per your site condition

Just refer to the Wall number #1-5 and/or Bench letter (A, B, C, etc.) in the final notes box (above the Add to Cart button)

    • LIGHTING — One light is included in the Accessories Bundle

Generally, we place the light on an open wall OR above a LOW bench but NOT above the sauna heater. Note, you can add lights under the benches too. See Step 4 > Lights

    • SWITCH — Usually best placed on the open side of the door (if there's space)
    • EXTERNAL CONTROLS — Our generic sauna plans show a heater with built-in controls. If you upgrade your heater, we'll place these controls next to the switch or specify where

Of course, when you actually install these items, do what you want. This is just for our Sauna Plan drawing and so we're both on the same page when discussing your sauna

    Add a Changing Room

    Add a Changing Room

Changing Rooms can only be added to 4x6′ and larger saunas. The Changing Room wall's smallest dimension will be 4 feet

It's best connect the sauna to the changing room, it works best usually to place your "SAUNA DOOR" on the SHORT Wall

Later, the "DOOR for the CHANGING ROOM" will go:
    • On a LONG WALL with a SLOPED ROOF, or
    • On the SHORT WALL with a PEAKED ROOF

To add the changing room, SEE the MAIN MENU: SAUNAS > CHANGING ROOMS

    Ceiling Height = Headroom

Figure below is the actual headroom! The ceiling panels will add 4 INCHES. IF this is an OUTDOOR sauna kit, the roof adds ~ 2 FEET additional.

Saunas heat from the TOP DOWN. For most residential saunas, ceiling joists should be built at roughly 7′0″.  Also know, that MOST residential sauna heaters are rated for ceilings 8 ft and lower.

Of course, you'll sweat just as well or better in a lower ceiling too. But metal sheeting fire protection is required if a ceiling < 6′2″ from the sauna floor. Defer to the manufacturer's installation manual in all cases for distance from top of heater to ceiling.

    Are Built-In Controls Better?

Why Choose a Heater with Built-in Controls?

    1. Long Lasting — Our experience is it's often 10 years before any parts need replacing
    2. Cost — It's the cheaper option, no doubt
    3. Easy to Wire — Simple for an electrician; only 4 wires (2 hots, neutral and ground)
    4. Failure Rate — Low. Digital controls involve motherboards which are sensitive to other conditions. We do like analog controls!
    5. Easy to Diagnose — If you buy a digital WiFi-controlled heater and something goes wrong, we can't diagnose it. There are simply too many factors. So if under warranty, we'll refer you to the distributor with better technicians and tools

    T&G Material

    T&G Cedar Material Thickness

T&G = Tongue and Groove – that's the cedar paneling on the walls

We offer standard 3/4″ material OR IF WxL = 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, 6x8 or 8x8, then you can select 1/2″ material

FAQ: What's the PROs and CONs of a thinner material?
    THICKNESS 11/16″ vs 7/16

    PROs of 1/2″ material
    • It looks the same
    • The insulation factor difference is negligible
    • It's saves you some money
    CONs of 1/2″ material
    • It's thinner (7/16″), so it flexes slightly where you lean against the wall
    • Consider adding extra wall blocking at back level height above benches
    • No one will know you saved money

What to Know about a Glass Front Wall

Glass front walls add an amazing ambiance to any sauna — Yes!! You're immediately self-invited … just looking at it!! So you're going to take more saunas. That said...

        • YOU MUST UPSIZE YOUR HEATER KW OUTPUT

Glass is beautiful AND it's also a HEAT SINK / LOSS! ... Every 10 square feet of Glass adds an EXTRA 50 Cu Ft volume of space to heat.
So 7x7′ wall adds 250 Cu ft to the CC Ft you're already heating for this sauna. 420 cc ft is the max of many 8kW heaters

        • You can't mount a heater to glass, cut it or run wire

So there's some extra design and planning details … And we're happy to help sort thru them with you

        Dimensions

        Dimensions

My walls are NOT built yet... What's the maximum coverage of this 5×6′ package?

    5×6′ SMP's Maximum Coverage?

FAQ: What's the MAXIMUM stud-to-stud-to-joist measurement that fits this 5x6 Sauna Materials Package?
    Set your wall spans at:
    • WIDTH = 5′15/8
    • LENGTH = 6′15/8
    • HEIGHT = 7′ 3/4″ *

IMPORTANT! When maximizing coverage, note you must leave a 3/4″ gap in all corners (except floor). The trim kit provided will cover all corner gaps!

    * NOTE: 3/4″ is the thickness of our standard cedar material. Decrease wall spans by 1/2″, IF you selected 1/2″ material (this option only available IF WxL = 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, 6x8 or 8x8)

At these dimensions, the sauna benches will fit perfectly with ~1/8″ on each side* — NO need to trim your benches and cutting the cedar boards is minimal. At these dimensions, sauna benches will drop in at an angle without scratching your cedar walls

    DUCKBOARD FLOORING

Duckboard is offered as 1x3″ smooth cedar material you'll build to cover on your hard floor

    HOW TO BUILD DUCKBOARD

We provide the materials per below / Assembly Required

    Duckboard Flooring Materials
    • 1x3″ S4S Tops (actual thickness 11/16″)
    • 1x3″ Sleepers (actual thickness 11/16″)
    Overall height 1 3/8 ″
Fasten up through the bottom of the sleepers using 1″ crown staples or screws, so NO fasteners are exposed to the feet

    Duckboard

    Duckboard Flooring

We offer a floor cover or grating called Cedar Duckboard that quickly warms to the foot and conceals your HARD floor*

Build duckboard with our 1x3″ cedar material in small sections. So it's removeable to clean. NO Flooring means your feet touch your HARD floor

► Duckboard is ALWAYS built AFTER installing your benches

    * HARD floor is your cement slab, tile, lineoleum, plywood, etc.

    SAUNA ACCESSORIES BUNDLE

Our Sauna Accessories Bundle completes the traditional sauna experience.

Regarding vent size: For a 5x6′ sauna, we recommend a 6kW heater (or stronger)

        Vent Size

        Proper Vents

Reasons you may want a stronger heater:
        • When adding an all-glass front wall
        • Your sauna is outdoors
        • You want more rock capacity (a feature of some heaters)

        Heaters < 9kW use 4x6″ size vents
        Heaters ≥ 9kW use 6x8″ size vents

        • Intake vents are placed behind or near the heater about 2″ above the floor
        • Exit vents are best placed in the opposite corner about 6″ below the ceiling
        • Small saunas (<4x6′) can use a 1/2″ gap under the door as an intake vent
Pick only the accessories that best complement your sauna tastes. Enjoy!

You may not need dedicated jamb material for your site condition. In this case, the jamb will fill the area between the window's frame and the front of the cedar T&G (Tongue & Groove). Generally you want to be slightly proud of the T&G by 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch

        Trim Material

        Trim Material

You may not need dedicated trim material for your existing window. Sometimes there's extra cedar flooring material (if you selected duckboard). Of course, there will be some extra material that would have covered your existing window's area. It's difficult to estimate that figure here until more details become available

Real Saunas Contain the Good Heat

The Fins call the good heat "Löyly". In Scandinavia, the sauna is considered a sacred space – a 'church of nature'
At the heart of the experience lies löyly, the spirit or steam released by casting water onto heated stones

Sauna Wall Anatomy Exterior Labeled

Sauna Wall Anatomy Interior Labeled
Interior View

How we contain the “Good Heat” / Löyly?

It starts with well-insulated sauna walls: 4″ thick with layers of insulation

  • 1×4″ T&G cedar paneling (11/16″) is the best material to absorb heat
  • Sauna Foil Vapor Barrier (1/64″) provides both reflective and conductive insulation so heat is evenly distributed over the sauna walls and immediately reflected back to the sauna interior
  • Walls are framed with 2×3″ cedar (2½”). Frames are studded 16″ on center
  • Rock wool insulation batting  (mineral-based, not fiberglass) keeps heat from leaking. Note: Barrel saunas have NO INSULATION
  • Tar paper, a water proofing material (1/16″). An indoor sauna, of course does not require that, but it’s worth noting that our indoor modular sauna kits can be relocated outdoors – just add a roof. Our indoor/outdoor kits start exactly the same!
  • Beveled cedar siding (¾”). The tapered exterior siding ensures water drips away from the walls. By the way, this is a similar material to what you find in barrel saunas. And that’s all they use in a barrel sauna to contain the heat.

A TRUE BANYA EXPERIENCE — If you’re looking for the true Banya sauna experience, then you’ll enjoy this complete indoor sauna room! Our 5×6′ Sauna Materials Package comes with door, 6kW heater, rocks, 3 benches and accessories for 3 sauna bathers.

HEATER — The 6kW sauna heater with built-in, digital or WiFi-enabled controls and vulcanite rocks. (Built-in controls are the simplest to wire). Substitute any heater or upgrade to wall-mounted digital controls or WiFi-enabled controls.

CONTAIN THE HEAT — Enjoy 170°F – 195°F in about 25 minutes. Our Modular Sauna Kits are the most insulated indoor sauna room kits available. The prebuilt panels ( wall + ceiling) are 4″ thick, so your sauna gets hotter faster and stays hotter longer. Thin-walled barrel saunas produced today have forgotten this simple principle: Contain the heat!

3 PRE-BUILT SAUNA BENCHESCarpenters say they’re beauts! Made from 100% clear western red cedar. No knots! The 3 pre-built sauna benches have smooth 2×2 tops and supported by 2×2 cedar legs. All fasteners are hidden from touch. Enjoy traditional fixed legs or optionally hot yoga style ledges – benches flip up or slide away creating standing space to exercise.

DOOR IS PRE-INSTALLED — Our short Rail and Stile sauna door with 16×55″ window glass comes installed in the front wall panel. The large glass adds extra light or a view.

  • Standard: Our SHORT door framed at 24×72″ / fits the 6′4″ ceiling height
