In saunas, we recommend leaving the cedar raw and untreated.  Cedar is rated the highest on the stability range of all woods, so it is ideal for sauna and shower rooms. In a shower or tub environment, we recommend sealing the cedar with several coats of Varathane or spar varnish. This provides a beautiful finish, improves overall hygiene, keeps the wood from getting water-stained and prevents soap scum build up. We also sell an all natural, non-toxic water based sauna sealer Miracle Cover, 1 gallon. For exterior applications, Sun Frog preserves cedar very well.  Provides a warm and natural element for any project.

We often get the question:

Is there an difference in insulation factor with ¹/₂″ vs ³/₄″ material? No, you will not notice any difference in heat-up time. The only concern is ¹/₂″ material does flex some between studs, so you might consider reinforcing your walls where sauna bathers lean back.
